Why the obvious sum is wrong
Dividing your target income by 2,080 hours gives a number that will not pay you. It ignores that tax comes off revenue, that the business has costs before you take anything, and that most of your working week is not billable. Do it that way and you set a rate you have to work weekends to survive on.
The billable hours question
This is where the honesty has to go. Quoting, admin, chasing invoices, bookkeeping, the calls that go nowhere and the hours you quietly write off are all unpaid. Twenty-five billable hours in a forty-hour week is a normal freelancer, not a lazy one. Put in what you actually bill and the rate comes out right.
Grossing up for tax
Tax is taken off revenue, so you divide by one minus the rate, not multiply by one plus it. At 30%, a €50,000 target needs about €71,400 of revenue, not €65,000 — a €6,400 gap that is exactly the size of the problem people discover in their first tax year.
